Chapter 20: The Rehearsal Dinner

Marlee's POV

The tent was back.

It stood on the same lawn in Forest Hills, white and strung with lights, with two hundred guests and a different band.

This time there were round tables with name cards, a long head table, and a pool behind it with a cover pulled back.

I came across the grass at seven o'clock on Friday with my father's Martin in my left hand and Josiah on my left.

He wore the good charcoal suit and a white shirt, and the earpiece was in his ear.

His palm settled at the small of my back.

"Ms. Dunavant," he said, so low only I could hear. "Contract runs until midnight."

"I know when it ends."

"I'm only saying."

"Say it again later," I said.

My stepmother met us at the edge of the tent in a navy silk dress, with a pen in her hand and a folded paper under it.

"You're on time," she said. "Good. Colt will toast, and then you'll come up and sign. Sit."

I sat at the end of the head table, where she pointed.

Josiah stood behind my chair.

Haylee, in white, three seats down, would not look at me.

The label president sat at the center, a tall silver-haired man in a quilted vest who had signed Colt's first record and ate his salad slowly.

Colt stood up with a glass.

He had shaved, and the hat was off, and he was smiling at the room.
