Chapter 7: The Double Arch
Marlee's POV
The Double Arch Bridge carries the Natchez Trace across a valley south of Nashville, on two concrete arches.
Josiah pulled the Tahoe into the overlook just before dark on Halloween and cut the engine.
Nobody else was there.
The trees on the ridge had gone red and gold, and a thin mist was lifting off the valley floor.
"You said it was a work trip," I said.
"I said I had a stop to make."
"This is a stop?"
"This is a very good stop," Josiah said. "I wanted you to see it before the leaves fall."
He had brought a thermos, two cups and a blanket.
He poured me coffee, and I held the cup in both hands and breathed it in.
It was the first quiet half hour I had had in a week.
"You haven't asked me," I said.
"Asked you what?"
"About the chapel."
He was silent.
"You've been carrying it since the night we met," I said. "You get a line between your eyebrows."
"I do not."
"You do. Right there."
I touched it with one finger, and it smoothed out under my thumb.
"Tell me the whole thing," Josiah said.
So I told him.
Colt had played his first showcase on a Thursday in October, in a room above a bar.
A man in a leather jacket told him to call his office.
That Saturday we drove to Gatlinburg in his truck with the windows down and sixty-three dollars between us.
The chapel had a neon heart out front and, under it in blue script, COME AS YOU ARE.
A woman in a sequined vest sat behind a desk in the office.
She told us that for fifty dollars we could have the Full Package.
It came with a minister, photographs, and a certificate with our names in gold.
