Chapter 15: The Fellowship

Margo's POV

Gideon came to Nell's door at seven on Tuesday night with a white envelope and his hands empty of everything else.

Nell took one look at us and went to find a late shift.

He sat on the arm of the couch and put the envelope on the cushion between us.

"It's the 911 call from Mill Road," he said. "I had a friend at county dispatch pull it. I did that Monday and I didn't tell you."

I looked at the envelope.

"Why not?"

"I didn't know if it existed. And I thought if it did, you'd be the one to decide whether you wanted it. Then I decided for you anyway." He rubbed his jaw. "I listened to it before I brought it. That was wrong too."

"You listened first."

"In the truck. I couldn't hand you something I hadn't heard."

I was angry for about a minute.

It was a clean, useful anger, and it was aimed at a man who was sitting there taking it.

"Is it Reid?" I said.

"It's Reid. Nineteen. He says it right away."

I picked up the envelope and held it.

It weighed nothing.

"I'm not going to play it here," I said. "Not on Nell's laptop, with you watching my face. Not alone in a room for three years' worth of crying."

"Then when?"

"In front of his father."

He took a moment with that.

"That's a hard way to hear it," he said.

"It's the only way he can't prepare for."

I wrote the email to the Foundation's office while he watched.

I asked to address the full board of trustees at their next meeting, in person, on the subject of the Garrity Fellowship.

I signed it Margo Tennant, and sent it before I could make it softer.

"Okay," I said, and shut the laptop. "I'm done being brave for today."
