Chapter 10: Dish Covered
Kostas's POV
I had four minutes, and I used the first to move her.
I put the towel around Fay's shoulders and took her by both arms.
"The dock," I said. "Go out the back and sit on the end of it. Do not come in until I come for you."
She looked at me with her wet hair against her neck and her gray eyes narrowed.
"You're hiding me from your sister," she said.
"I am keeping my sister from you."
"Is there a difference?"
"Yes," I said. "She will not be kind to you in my house."
Fay went.
She went quickly, in my sweater and her jeans, barefoot over the boards and out through the kitchen door.
I watched the door close behind her.
The old quiet came down on me, the quiet I had worn eleven months like a second coat.
I dressed.
I buttoned my shirt with my left hand, which was slow, and set my shoulders.
The black Lincoln stopped at the foot of the porch steps.
My sister got out of the back seat with a covered dish in both hands.
Eleni came up the steps in her good black coat, with her cross on her chest and her rings catching the gray light.
The supervisor's rule said I could not set foot on the gravel.
I opened the door and stood in it.
"Kostaki," Eleni said.
Her face broke into a soft smile I had known for fifty years.
"My brother. You are thin."
"Eleni," I said.
"I have made the lamb you like."
"I do not eat lamb on a Saturday."
