Chapter 15: What He Wants

I drove back to the cottage with the radio off and my hands white on the wheel.

By the time I reached the gravel road, the thing in my chest had stopped being grief and become something with edges.

The county car was gone.

The supervisor made his rounds at nine and at five, and it was a little after two.

Kostas was on the porch steps, in his shirt-sleeves, with a mug of coffee going cold in his hand.

He stood up when he saw the Subaru.

I got out and shut the door hard.

"You went to see her," he said.

"Yes," I said.

"I knew when you said candle."

"Then why didn't you stop me?"

"Because I have never once stopped you," he said, "and I do not intend to start."

I walked up the steps.

I could feel my own pulse in my throat.

I did not want to do it on the porch.

I walked past him into the kitchen, and he followed me in and shut the door.

The stove had burned down.

The pantry door still hung a little crooked on its hinge, and a dent in the plaster beside it showed where his shoulder had been.

"Sit down," I said.

"I would rather stand," he said.

"Then stand there."

He stood by the table and put his hands flat on it.

I took off my coat and laid it over a chair.

"I went to Eleni's," I said, "and I asked her why. And she told me."

His face did not change.

"She told me she put it in his head," I said. "She told him which closet."

"Fay," he said.

"She said it with her hand on her cross, and she did not lower her voice."

"Fay," he said again.

"I was the weapon. Do you hear me? She picked me. She knew I'd take it to the state. She counted on the exact thing I am."

My voice shook, and I let it.
