Chapter 21: The Dish He Refused
Kostas's POV
The visiting room at the county facility had twelve stools bolted to the floor in front of twelve panels of scratched glass.
I had a stool at the end, by the wall.
I had sat on it for six Sundays, and I knew its wobble.
At two o'clock on the seventh, a guard brought in a woman I had known for fifty-one years, and I did not at first recognize her.
Eleni wore a gray cardigan.
She had no cross.
The guards had taken it at the door with her rings and put them in a clear plastic bag.
Her hands lay bare on the counter in front of the glass, small and brown and spotted.
She had been put out of the church hall.
The parish council had met on the Tuesday after the hearing.
The priest had come to her house himself and asked for the keys.
He had been kind about it, and he was the same man who had baptized Niko.
Her seat on the port contracts had gone the same week, to a cousin from Dundalk.
The family had voted, and nobody had thought to call her.
She had a covered dish on the counter, in a blue towel.
The guard had searched it and given it back.
She lifted the phone off its hook on her side.
I lifted mine.
For a while neither of us spoke.
"Kostaki," she said at last.
"Eleni," I said.
"You are thin," she said.
"I have been told," I said.
"I have made the lamb. They will let you have it at the end of the visit. I asked the sergeant."
She pushed the dish an inch across the counter, toward the slot at the bottom of the glass.
I looked at it.
I had eaten from her hands since I was four.
She had cut my meat when our mother was ill.
The night Daphne died, she brought me a plate at the hospital and sat by me while I did not eat it.
