Chapter 15: The Pool House

I called Corbin from the parking lot with Ashton's cracked phone in my other hand.

He answered on the first ring.

"They took him," I said. "A black SUV, no plates, about four minutes ago."

"Rex's," Corbin said at once.

"Where does Rex keep people?"

He didn't ask why I was calling him.

He breathed twice, and I heard him decide.

"Holmby Hills.

"There's a pool house behind the main residence with its own lock and a sound-proofed wall.

"He puts artists there when they need a quiet weekend."

"Can I get in?"

"The front gate has two guards.

"The service gate on the side street uses a keypad.

"I've driven Lila through it for five years."

He gave me six numbers.

I wrote them on my hand in pen.

"Corbin."

"I'll go to the front," he said.

"What?"

"I'll pull up at the main gate and shout that I'm Lila's fiancé and I want to see her.

"They know my face.

"They'll all come out to throw me off the property, and it'll take them a while."

I stood very still on hot asphalt.

"Why would you do that?"

"Because it's the only useful thing I have left," he said, "and I'd like to be useful once."

Dottie drove, and I held the skillet in my lap for no reason.

The side street was lined with sycamores and hedges so tall you couldn't see a single roof.

At the service gate, the keypad glowed green.
