Chapter 6: Nothing Until the Signing

I picked up the page and folded it in half.

"I don't sign anything without my father's lawyer reading it," I said.

"That's an insult," Dalton's mother said.

"It's a Thursday night. Nobody's lawyer is awake." I put the page in my coat pocket. "I'll bring it to Appleton Hall tomorrow and sign it in front of everyone, if the lawyer says it's fine."

Dalton and Cora looked at each other.

I saw them calculate that the press and the cameras would make me look generous.

"In front of everyone," Dalton said slowly.

"You wanted to be there."

"I do."

"Then I'll see you at nine."

I walked out of the Fenn house with my spine very straight and did not run.

Zane had the car door open before I reached the curb.

I got in and held my hands between my knees.

They were shaking so badly I could not hide it.

"Drive," I said.

"Hallie."

"Please drive."

He pulled out.

We had gone a block when a woman came running down the sidewalk behind us, waving.

"Stop the car," I said.

My mother stood on the curb with her coat flapping, out of breath.

I lowered the window two inches.

"Hallie." Her voice had no kindness in it now. "Sign it."

"Good night, Mom."

"You were nothing before that man found you. A girl in a laundromat. You'd be in a motel right now if not for us."

"For you?"

"I raised you." She gripped the glass. "If you humiliate this family tomorrow, I'll tell Bernard Appleton exactly who his daughter is. I'll tell him what you did to Dalton. He'll cut you off before you touch the pen."
