Chapter 12: Pell's Wharf
I held the phone out so Harker could see it.
She looked at the photo, then at me.
"He's making a point," she said.
"He's making it with my mother."
My father saw the picture over her shoulder and made a sound like he'd been hit.
"Which child," he said. "He wants us to say it."
"He wants me to walk in there," I said. "So I'm going to."
At five-thirty I stood at the chain-link gate of the Fitzgerald yard at Pell's Wharf.
The sky was going from black to dark grey over the water.
Old cranes. Rusted containers. A long wooden shed at the end of the pier with one light on inside.
The earpiece sat cold in my ear.
"We're in position," Tobias said, very low. "Four hundred yards back. Talk to me."
I closed my eyes.
I let the whole yard in.
Gulls. Water under the pilings. A diesel generator thumping somewhere on the right.
Hearts.
"Two on the crane to the left, forty feet up," I whispered. "One behind the blue container."
