Chapter 13: In the Dark
The dark came down all at once.
Audra screamed.
A man by the door swore and fumbled for a flashlight.
Lachlan didn't move. I heard him not move.
His heart went from slow to fast in one beat.
"Rory," he said into the black. "I still have her."
He did.
I could hear the pistol where it was. The tiny creak of his grip on it.
I could hear my mother breathing through her teeth, two feet from the barrel.
I had spent a year moving through a house in the dark so nobody would hear me.
I didn't need light. I never had.
I took three steps to the left on the balls of my feet.
"Rory, I swear to God."
His head turned toward where I had been.
The gun turned with it.
Away from my mother.
I came in from his right side.
I caught his wrist with both hands and drove it down and across, into my knee.
The gun went off into the floorboards.
