Chapter 14: The Porch on Pike Lake
Eli's POV
I didn't tell Nell where I was going.
The woman's voicemail had said to come alone, and I didn't want Nell's mother learning anything through her.
Pike Lake was forty minutes north, a string of small cabins with docks and dead leaves in the yards.
The address was a green house at the end of a gravel drive, with a fishing boat on a trailer beside it.
I parked and walked up to the porch.
Nobody answered the door. I sat down on the top step to wait, because I had been waiting for six years and could manage another hour.
The wind came off the lake. A kettle whistled somewhere inside, and then stopped.
After a long while the door opened behind me.
"You look like your father," a woman said.
She was in her seventies, with white hair and a cardigan buttoned wrong.
"Ma'am."
"Come in before the neighbors see you. He's in the kitchen."
The doctor sat at a small table with his hands around a mug.
He was thin and bent, and his hands shook so much that the tea slopped over.
"Mr. Hadley," he said. "I owe you an apology I can't afford."
"Start with the baby."
"The baby lived." He said it to the table. "She was six pounds and three ounces and she cried at once. I handed her to the nurse myself."
I had known it for two days. Hearing it from the man who delivered her put me back in the chair, hard.
"And Nell?"
"Nell was bleeding. She had an infection that would have killed her without the ICU." He looked up. "She woke on the third day and asked for her daughter."
