Chapter 13: The Nine
The hall broke open all at once.
A man Alpha near the door was on his feet shouting that Garrick had lost his mind.
A woman Alpha was shouting back that he had lost nothing, and that she would hear every name.
"Sit," Conrad said, and nobody sat.
Two chairs down from my father, an Alpha with a grey beard stood and drew a short sword.
He did not point it at my father.
He pointed it at the black chair.
"The king burned my sister's pack on a letter," he said. "Whatever we did, he did worse."
"Yes," Conrad said. "That is why I am not asking you to be quiet. I am asking you to be counted."
"Counted!"
"Every one of you, one at a time, before the harvest moon sets."
My father laughed.
It was a short, cracked laugh, and it made my skin crawl.
"She'll tell you the rest herself, Your Majesty," he said, and pointed at me with a shaking finger. "Ask my daughter why she walked into your keep with a knife."
The hall went quiet.
"Ask her what she promised her mother, who died in my house," he said. "She came here to cut your throat."
I did not look at Conrad.
I could not have borne it if he had looked away.
"She did," Conrad said.
His voice was flat, and every Alpha heard it.
"She came to kill me. She told me so to my face, and then she tried it, in my own hall, with my own people watching."
Someone behind me drew a breath.
"I took the blade through my hand," Conrad said. "She kept her word that she would warn me before the next time. There was no next time."
"That is a madwoman," my father said.
"That," Conrad said, "is the only person who has dealt honestly with me in forty years."
