Chapter 14: Jonas

Redmoor had brought twenty wolves to the Gathering, and they had pitched their tents on the flat ground outside the keep gate.

The green banner hung from a pole at the center.

I came down the gate road at a run with Conrad behind me and the Beta's wolves behind him.

"Stay at the gate," I told Conrad.

"No."

"If you walk in there wearing that coat, they will see the king who burns packs. They need to see me first."

He stopped.

I could see what it cost him.

"Call and I come," he said.

I went in alone, with my mother's dagger bare in my hand.

The camp was loud with wolves arguing in low voices, and they went quiet as I passed.

They knew who I was.

They had known me since I was a child, and not one of them said hello.

I found Jonas at the horse line, behind the last tent.

He was standing with his forehead against a gelding's neck and his shoulders were moving.

Two saddled horses stood beside him, and a third pack mule was already loaded.

"Jonas."

He turned his head.

His face was a mess, red-eyed and wet, and I had not seen my brother cry since our mother's funeral.

"Cecily is in the command tent," he said. "She's telling the wolves we ride for Redmoor tonight. She says the king will burn us all by morning for what Father did."

"Is she wrong?"

"I don't know." He wiped his nose on his sleeve. "I don't know anything. I don't know what's true."
