Chapter 8: Ashfen

He knocked on my door that night with a lamp in his good hand and my father's letter under his arm.

He set the letter on the window ledge beside the lamp.

"He wrote my name as if I were still walking," I said. "His wolves tried to kill me, and he wrote to you that I was coming."

"He did not need you to arrive," Conrad said. "He needed me to believe you would."

I looked at my father's handwriting and did not touch it.

"The kitchen was supper's question," he said. "Ask what you like now, and I'll answer."

I let him in, mostly because I wanted the answer more than I wanted the door shut.

He sat on the stone ledge of the window with the lamp between us.

I stayed on the bed with the dagger on my knee.

The room smelled of beeswax and woodsmoke, and the fire was low.

"Why Ashfen?" I said.

He did not pretend not to understand.

"Two years running, Ashfen sent me no one," he said. "The law says two years is a refusal."

"My mother's youngest sister left Ashfen the autumn I was three," I said. "She walked out of the gate with a bundle on her back and her hair in a braid."

"Saskia."

"A cousin went the autumn after. Neither of them came home."

"Neither of them came to me."

"That's a lie."

"It is the thing I am most sure of in the world." His voice was steady. "I stood at my gate on both offering nights, and no girl came from Ashfen."
