Chapter 4: The Garage

I came down the three concrete steps one at a time and stopped an arm's length from her.

The Volvo stood between us with its hood still warm from the evening.

"Give me the key, Willa," Callie said.

"No."

"Please. I'm asking nicely."

She did look nice.

Her hair was loose, her face was bare, and her eyes were wet in the garage light.

"You can't drive," she said. "You haven't driven in seven years. You'll put that car in a ditch."

"You haven't been behind a wheel since Route 6," I said. "Have you?"

She flinched.

"Benton drove us home from the raid," I said. "You shut your eyes at every red light."

"Stop it."

"Is that why you don't drive? Because of that night?"

Callie sat down on the bumper, very suddenly, and her knees gave out.

"I see him every night," she said. "He had a blue helmet. It came off his head and rolled."

"He was forty-one," I said. "A father. It was in the paper."

"Don't."

"He had a seven-year-old daughter. You must have read it."

"Of course I read it." She pressed her fingers against her mouth. "I read it every day for a year. Then I stopped, because Mom said it was making me sick."

"And me?"

"Mom told me you were in a program. A good one, somewhere in Arizona." She looked at the floor. "I believed her for the first year. Then I stopped asking, because I liked the house."

It was the first true thing anyone in that family had said to me.

I felt my chest open, a little, against my will.

"Callie," I said. "Come with me. Right now. We'll go to the agent together. You tell him what happened on Route 6 and I'll tell him the rest."
