Chapter 10: The Priest

The priest at St. Anthony's had taught me my catechism at nine and caught me stealing communion wafers at ten.

He sat behind a desk the size of a door with his reading glasses pushed up on his forehead.

"A bride from the Ferrante house," he said, and shook his head slowly. "Last month I had the other brother in this chair, with the same girl, and the same date."

"I know, Father," I said.

"I wonder if you do." He took the glasses down. "Preparation for marriage is five sessions. We will do them in two weeks, because the church has some mercy. Let us begin with the easy question."

He folded his hands.

"How did you two meet?"

Gemma answered before I could open my mouth.

"At a family party, Father. A long time ago."

"A christening," the priest said, nodding. "The Ferrante baby."

I frowned.

"I don't think I was at that one."

"You were," Gemma said.

She did not look at me, and she did not say it hard, but it sounded like the end of the subject.

The priest studied her over his folded hands, and then studied me.

"Nico, how long have you known this lady?"

"I've known of her my whole life," I said. "I've known her a week."

"And you love her?"

The room was very quiet.

I could hear the radiator tick.

Under the desk, Gemma's hand slid onto my knee and rested there, warm, and did not move.

I thought of the loft, and the note, and the empty pillow, and the coffee she had made the way I like it without being told.

"I'm going to marry her," I said. "I'm not going to lie to you about the rest."

The priest sat back.

"Good answer," he said. "Not the usual one. Gemma?"
