Chapter 18: The Arcade
"Arlo. Arlo, wake up."
He was out of bed before I finished his name.
We dressed in the dark. His jeans. My sundress, zipped halfway. His flannel over it.
He was down the stairs three at a time.
I grabbed the fire extinguisher from behind the diner counter, the same one he'd carried out the day the sign fell.
The arcade had been closed for six years. Plywood on one window, old pinball machines under sheets inside.
Now flames were coming out of the plywood. The roof was smoking along its whole length.
The wind was blowing in off the water. Straight down the pier. Toward the carousel.
"Call it in!" Arlo shouted.
"The nurse already did!"
She was running up the boards from the lot in her scrubs, phone to her ear.
One of the fishermen was behind her with a flashlight.
"I was at the far end," he panted. "I saw it the same second you did. It went up all at once."
"All at once," Arlo said.
The bait-shop door banged open. The old man came out in long johns and a slicker with two extinguishers under his arms.
