Chapter 7: This Month
Damon got out of the car and buttoned his jacket.
He looked up at the pier. Then at the gap over the door where the sign used to hang.
"Who's that?" Arlo said.
"That's what I was trying to tell you."
The door opened. The new bell Marigold had tied to the handle with yarn jingled.
Every head in the diner turned.
Nine customers. The bait-shop owner at the counter. The two fishermen. The night nurse. A young couple with a stroller. Three workers from the cannery down the road in orange vests.
Damon in a navy suit looked like a shark that had swum into a fish tank.
He found me at once.
"Noelle."
"Table for one?"
"Don't." He came down the counter. "You turned your phone off for two days."
"I had a lot going on. I got disowned."
One of the fishermen snorted into his coffee.
Damon didn't look at him.
"Can we talk somewhere private?"
"No. Sit or stand. I've got eggs going cold."
I set the plates in front of the cannery workers.
Damon took the stool next to the bait-shop owner and put his phone on the counter, face up.
The Kessington ticker was on the screen. A red line falling off a cliff.
"Thirteen percent," he said. "In three days. The board called an emergency meeting this morning."
"I'm sorry. Coffee?"
"Noelle."
I poured him coffee.
He didn't touch it.
"Your father is meeting with lawyers. Your mother hasn't slept. Clarissa's stomach is worse."
"Is it?"
"She's been crying since the press conference. She thinks this is her fault."
"It is her fault. That's the one thing she's ever been right about."
The nurse in the booth lowered her mug to listen properly.
