Chapter 15: Take It Back
I did not sleep, so I read Elin Radcliffe's garden journal at the kitchen table until the window turned grey.
Most of it was seed dates and frost warnings in a neat, slanted hand.
The last pages were different.
The ink was thin there, and the lines wandered.
Third time I asked R to send for the Southfork healer. He says Ironwood does not kneel to Southfork. I told him I'd rather he were afraid of losing me than proud.
He said nothing and went out to the yard.
Under that, the final line was only a few words long.
Jasper brought me a moonflower today. He is not afraid of anything.
I closed the book and sat there with both hands on the cover.
Then the sun cleared the ridge, and the bond came back all at once.
It hit my chest and pulled tight.
I gasped and gripped the table, and out in the yard something scraped across stone.
I went out barefoot.
Jasper was on his feet beside the bench, with his hand pressed to his ribs.
He had been there all night.
"There you are," he said, and his eyes were wet.
"You stayed."
"I didn't have anywhere better." He tried to laugh and could not. "Autumn, I need to say it before I lose my nerve."
"Then say it."
"It wasn't the bond."
He said it fast, looking at the ground.
"Last night I couldn't feel you at all, and I wanted you the whole time. I wanted to stay on that bench until it was light, and I did."
