Chapter 21: Where It Counts

Jasper's POV

I did not sleep, and I was not sorry.

I stood in my mother's garden at first light with the moonflowers closing around me, and I practiced the words under my breath until they sounded like a lie.

Then I stopped practicing.

Nothing I wrote would be good enough.

I would say it the plain way, and let it be bad.

The pack was already on the meadow when I walked up.

Three hundred wolves, and the Beta at the front with his daughter's empty place beside him.

My father's seat on the council stone was empty too.

Autumn stood in the second row, between Lottie and the old healer, with her braid over her shoulder.

She did not know what I was going to say.

She knew it was coming, and I could feel her nerves in my own chest, small and bright.

I climbed onto the stone.

"Autumn Ostley holds my name," I said. "She holds it for a year and a day, and she can command me. Nobody has commanded me to stand up here."

A few wolves shifted their feet.

"Four winters ago I stood on a bank and watched a girl get pulled out of the lower pond, and I walked back to a fire."

"I did not look at her face. I have gone over it every night since I found out, and there is no excuse. There is only the fact."

"At the Midsummer Moon, I gave that same girl a hundred rules, and I meant them as a weapon."
