Chapter 11: The Border Is the Delivery

I pulled on the green dress, and Evander caught my hand at the door.

"Don't go down there alone."

"He won't talk with you in the house," I said. "You saw how he ran in the library."

"I'll be on the terrace. If you call, I'll be there before you finish the word."

I believed him.

That was the strange part.

The garden was white with old snow.

Gavin stood in the shadow of a hedge with his hands jammed in his pockets and his breath smoking.

He saw me come and stepped forward, and he stopped when he saw my throat.

The bite was still wet.

"I'm not here to talk about that," I said.

"I know."

"Five minutes. Then I'm going back inside."

"That's all I need." His voice was thin. "Seren, I'm going to say it fast, because if I stop I won't start again."

"Then say it."

He swallowed.

"The night of the ceremony wasn't fate. My father told me three weeks before. He sat me down in his study and said you weren't going to shift."

I did not move.

"He said he'd known since you were a baby. That the Goddess had no wolf for you, because you weren't one." His ears were burning. "That you were human, Seren."

The cold went through my dress.

I had suspected it for two months.

Hearing it said aloud in the dark, by the boy I had loved, was different.

"He knew," I said.

"He always knew."

"And he raised me anyway."

"He raised you on purpose." Gavin's voice cracked. "Eighteen years ago, a vampire lord paid him to keep a human child alive and healthy in the pack. He was paid every year until you turned eighteen. On your birthday, the child goes to the lord."
