Chapter 13: Silver in the Cellar

Four wolves came out of the pines before I could run.

One of them hit Gavin from behind, and he went down in the slush without a sound.

I kicked the second wolf in the knee, and the third one caught my arms.

"Gently," Camryn said. "She's a package."

A hood went over my head.

The last thing I heard was Gavin yelling my name.

I woke on a stone floor that smelled of damp and old apples.

My wrists were tied behind me with rope, and my cheek was sticking to the ground.

The Alpha's cellar.

I had been sent down here for a jar of preserves when I was nine years old.

Gavin lay against the opposite wall with blood dried down his chin.

"Seren." His voice was a croak. "I'm sorry. They were waiting at the boathouse road too."

"Did they find it?"

"No. They think I hid it far away."

Boots came down the stairs.

Ronan Calderwood walked into the lamplight, still wearing his warm smile.

Camryn stood behind him, holding a coat she had taken off me.

"Seren, sweetheart," Ronan said. "I'm sorry about the rope. You're the kind of girl who runs."

"You sold me," I said.

"I arranged you."

He crouched in front of me, close enough that I could smell his cologne.

"Eighteen years ago, a woman left a baby on my tree line wrapped in a blanket. Anyone else would have called it a tragedy."

"And you called it a business."

"I called it a gift from the Goddess. A human child is worth more than this pack's whole territory. Lord Aurelian paid for your food, your school and your dresses. He paid for my lodge."

"You smiled at me every day."

"You were a good investment." He patted my cheek. "I even grew fond of you."

I spat in his face.

He wiped it off with a handkerchief, and he was still smiling.

"Camryn," he said. "Show her what you brought."
