Chapter 12: The Pull

I broke the grey wax with my thumb and read the Alpha's letter standing in the tent door.

The paper was heavy and the handwriting sloped.

Miss Corvino, the council has set the closing for the full moon, forty-four days from today.

You will stand at the stone before the whole pack.

Your mother will present you, and Alexander will stand across from you.

If you do not appear, your standing in the pack ends and your family's land goes back to the pack.

Bring nothing but your name.

I read it twice. Then I handed it to Tobias.

"Your family's land," he said, when he reached the end.

"My mother's house. It sits on pack ground. If I don't go, she loses it."

"And she knows."

"She knew before he wrote it."

He folded the paper along its creases with great care.

"It's a pressure play," he said. "Your mother will tell you to come home and be kind. The Alpha has already said it, in writing, so that you can't claim you didn't know."

"I'm going anyway."

"I know." He put the letter on the cot. "You'll go because you choose to, and not because they asked."

I would have said something clever. A cold wave went down my arm and I grabbed his sleeve.

"Nina?"

"It's the thread."

It pulled in the next minute with more force than before, a hard bright line drawn through my chest.
