Chapter 6: The Gate
The Alpha's letter was waiting in my mailbox on the morning I left for the airport.
It was cream paper, folded in thirds, sealed with grey wax. Nobody under fifty sent mail like that.
I read it standing on the sidewalk with my suitcase at my feet.
Miss Corvino, a rejection that is spoken must be closed at the Alpha's stone.
It must happen under the full moon, within sixty days.
Both parties will stand. Fifty-one days remain.
The Murgatroyd pack expects you.
There was a line at the bottom in the Alpha's own hand.
Your family will be present.
I carried the letter to the airport in my coat pocket and showed it to Tobias at the security line.
He read it twice and gave it back.
"It's real law," he said. "If you don't close it, the thread stays open. It starts pulling in the winter. People who ignore it get sick, and some don't recover."
"So I have to go back."
"You have to stand at that stone once. After that you never have to see any of them again."
"And the Alpha says my family will be there."
"Then you'll have a witness," he said. "Better to have them in the room than outside it."
We reached gate twelve with forty minutes to spare. The board said Oslo, and I let myself breathe.
Then I heard my name.
"Nina! Nina, wait!"
Giada came across the terminal in white sneakers with a ring light on a stick.
Behind her came a boy with a camera and a girl holding a boom mic.
The people at the gate turned to look.
