Chapter 18: Friday
The bank on Capitol Boulevard had a conference room with a long walnut table and a window that looked at the dome.
Idoia was already seated at the head of it, in the camel coat, with a leather folder squared in front of her and a glass of water she was not drinking.
A man in a gray suit sat beside her.
He was the buyer's lawyer.
A bank manager sat at the foot, wiping his glasses.
I walked in with the green ledger under my arm and Ximun two steps behind me.
He did not sit.
He stood against the wall by the door with his hat in both hands, as he had said he would, and I saw the lawyer look at him and look away.
"Amaia," said Idoia, with the dimple.
"I'm so glad you came."
"I said I would."
"Sit.
"Papa has signed the transfer.
"All that's wanted is a witness from the yard, and the crew's acknowledgment."
She slid a stapled document down the table.
I did not pick it up.
"I'll read it first," I said.
"Darling, it's twenty pages."
"I read twenty pages before breakfast."
I sat.
I pulled the document toward me and began, in a clear voice, at the top.
"Purchase agreement between Iriondo Feed and Freight and Gem State Land Holdings," I read.
"Purchase price, one million, four hundred thousand dollars."
The bank manager shifted.
"For a yard that moves eleven thousand tons of feed a year," I said, "and holds nine acres on the Boise River."
"It's a distressed sale," said the lawyer smoothly.
"I'm reading," I said.
I turned the page.
I read the whole of it aloud.
I read the clause about the water rights and the clause about the lease on the hay barn, and Idoia sat very still with her hands folded on the folder.
