Ximun's POV
I could not stop touching my own wrist.
She had held it in the dark, in the study, to stop my hand from moving before she was ready.
I could still feel the exact place, three fingers and a thumb.
I stood at the sheepfold gate at six in the morning with a coffee going cold, rubbing my thumb across my own pulse like a boy with a bruise.
Four of the outfit men were in the yard.
They had come up the south road in two pickups with their hats on and their trailers empty, to talk about spring freight rates.
They were looking at the kitchen window.
A small woman in a man's wool coat stood there feeding a lamb out of a bottle.
"That the Iriondo girl?" said the oldest of them.
He owned half of a county, and the other half owed him money.
"That's my wife," I said.
"Is she?"
He said it mildly.
Every man in the yard went quiet and waited.
I understood what he was asking.
He was asking whether the King of the Owyhee, who had held four million dollars over the Iriondos for eleven years, was about to let it slide because the girl had a pretty mouth.
If I let it slide, every man in the south country would stop paying me on time.
If I didn't, I would have to hurt her.
"She reads better than anyone in three counties," I said.
"I'm told she can find a missing nickel in a ledger by the smell."
