Chapter 9: The Sheep-Camp Road
He drove us out onto the sheep-camp road after the guests had gone.
He did not say where.
I did not ask.
It was past midnight and the road was two ruts through sage, climbing into dark hills with the high desert silent on all sides.
He cut the headlights a mile out.
We went the last stretch by starlight, slowly, until the road ended at a flat place under a rock outcrop.
He turned off the engine.
The cab ticked.
The sky was enormous.
I had never seen so many stars.
"Idoia saw the ring was off," Ximun said.
"She was in the pantry with you."
"I know," I said.
"I heard the card."
He had both hands on the wheel, at ten and two, and he kept them there.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"For what?"
"I let her into my house.
"I sat at the head of my table and let her tell my cousins about your father's weakness."
His hands tightened.
"I wanted her to talk.
"I wanted to see what she would say."
"And?" I said.
"She says she writes the card."
He turned his head and looked at me.
In the starlight his face was only planes, the broken nose, the gray at the temples, the hard mouth.
"Amaia," he said.
"Tell me what to do.
"I have never not known."
I thought about my sister's bracelet and my father's soft hands and a column of numbers from a bank that wasn't ours.
