Chapter 21: March

The ice began to break in the third week of March.

I heard it from the bath.

First came a long groan from far out on the lake, then a crack like a rifle.

Then came a rumbling, as if a train were crossing a bridge a mile away.

I was lying in the claw-footed tub at the end of the hall, with the window open an inch and the steam going out into the cold.

"Come here," I said.

Xander stood in the doorway with a towel over his shoulder.

He had been shaving.

There was still a line of foam under his left ear.

"The ice is going," he said.

"I know," I said.

"I want you to move the bed."

"Which bed?" he said.

"Mine," I said.

"The one with the bolt.

"It's in the wrong place.

"I want it under the window, where I can see the lake from the pillow."

He looked at me.

I watched him work out the small plain thing under the big one.

"You want me to move it," he said.

"You and Ilija," I said.

"Not today.

"Today I want you in the tub."

"I have just shaved," he said.

"Get in," I said.

He took off his clothes and left them on the tile.

He stepped over the rim with the water sloshing, tall and scarred and wet to the knee.
