Chapter 22: What I Own
"On the rock," I said.
It was noon on the last Sunday of March, and the sun was out.
It was the first warm day of the year.
The snow had gone from the shelf of stone below the lake house, and the rock lay bare and dry and gold in the light.
The lake lay in front of us in broken plates, with black water showing between them.
The water moved.
It had not moved since December.
I stood at the edge of the rock in my coat, and he stood a step behind me.
Neither of us said anything for a while.
"Take off your coat," I said.
"It is forty degrees," he said.
"I'm not asking about the weather."
He took off his coat and spread it on the rock.
He took off his sweater.
I turned and looked at him in the bright cold air, broad and pale and scarred, with the gray at his temples and the lake behind him.
It went through me, plain and hot.
"This is the place," I said.
"I know," he said.
"This is where you stood every night."
