Chapter 11: Say It Again
"I'm staying," I said again.
"Again."
"I'm staying, Luca Vannelli. I'm staying in your house and your bed. I'm staying when my father's men come to the gate."
His hands were in my hair.
They shook.
"Tell me your middle name," he said.
I laughed, startled. "What?"
"Your middle name. I signed a contract with you and I don't know it."
"Maria. Raffaela Maria."
He nodded slowly, taking it in.
"Your favorite food."
"My mother's lemon cake. I burned it eight times before I got it right."
He listened with his whole face.
"What are you afraid of?"
"Being asked to be sensible."
He kissed me, slow and deep, and I felt the whole long table behind my hips, white and bare and cold.
"What did you want to be, when you were small?"
"A lighthouse keeper."
He frowned, puzzled.
"A what?"
"I wanted to live on a rock and be left alone."
He smiled against my mouth.
It was the first time I had felt him smile, and it went through my whole body.
"Anything else I should know?"
"You could stop talking," I said, "and take my dress off."
He did.
He found the zipper at my back and drew it down, and the dress slid off my shoulders and gathered at my waist.
He pushed it lower, over my hips, and it fell to the floor around my shoes.
I stood in the dining room of the Vannelli house in the middle of the morning, in my underwear, with the lock turned.
