Chapter 12: The Letters
Sabra's POV
Opal sat down on the top step with her apron in her lap.
Beau stood on the sidewalk below us, a long way down, holding the envelope.
I had picked the spot on purpose.
I wanted him lower than we were.
"Open it," I said.
His thumbs shook.
He tore the flap and drew out one sheet of lined paper, folded in thirds, and held it up to the light.
"It's dated," he said. "It's from the week after the verdict."
"Read."
He cleared his throat.
"Dear Mr. Braswell. You don't know me. You know my name, and I wish you didn't. I was the intern who delivered the statement that was used against you. I signed it because my father told me to, and I knew by morning it was wrong."
His voice caught, and he began again.
"I'm not writing to be forgiven. I'm not writing to ask for anything. I wanted you to know that somebody in that courtroom understood what had been done to you. I'll write again next month. You don't have to answer. Beau Ravenel."
There was a long silence on the street.
A mockingbird sang in Opal's rosebush in the silence.
Opal wiped her eyes with the corner of her apron.
"Well," she said hoarsely. "He didn't beg."
"No."
"I'd have thought a Ravenel would beg," said Opal.
"Opal."
"I'm only saying it's an honest letter."
I took the page from Beau's hand and read it myself, from the first line to the last, though I had just heard every word.
He had written it in a careful boy's handwriting.
I felt something in my chest give, and I did not like it.
"I'm not forgiving you," I said.
"I'm not asking you to."
