Chapter 27: The Board
The boardroom of Ravenel Terminals had a table of black walnut that seated sixteen, and at eight o'clock that morning every chair was taken.
I sat against the wall in a borrowed seat, in my navy dress, with Opal on one side of me and Clarice's lawyer on the other.
I was a spouse, not a director.
I had no vote.
I had only my face, and that was the thing I meant to use.
Beau sat at the table in his place, three seats down from his father.
He had not looked at me once since we came in.
Winston presided at the head, silver and rested, with a glass of water and a folder.
Beside him sat a stranger in a charcoal suit with the polished manner of a man who is about to buy something.
"Directors," Winston said. "We have a quorum. The sole item is a resolution to authorize the sale of Ravenel Terminals to Harbor Crest Partners, at a price of four hundred and ten million dollars, to close before the end of the fiscal year."
A rustle went around the table.
