Chapter 17: Stairs
He followed me into my father's house at eleven o'clock, shut the front door with his heel, and turned the deadbolt without looking.
The hall light was on, a yellow bulb in a glass shade over the stairs.
The house ticked and settled around us.
I had left every light on that morning, because I could not stand to come home to the dark.
"Don't take your coat off," Milan said.
I stopped with one sleeve down.
"Leave it on. Come here."
He backed me up against the newel post at the foot of the stairs.
He put one hand beside my head on the wood and looked at me from very close.
"You stood up in front of two hundred people tonight," he said.
"Eighty."
"Two hundred felt like it."
"It did," I said.
"I wanted to put you on a table and take you in front of every one of them."
My knees went.
"But you didn't," I said.
"You told me to stay in my seat."
"I'm telling you something else now."
"What?" he asked.
"Do what you wanted to do on the table," I said. "On the stairs."
His eyes went black.
"Sit on the fourth step," he said.
I climbed up and sat.
The carpet runner was my mother's pick, a faded green with a pattern worn to threads in the middle of each tread.
The banister was cool against my shoulder.
I sat with my knees together and my coat open and the hall light shining down on me.
He came up the bottom steps, one, two, and stopped on the second, so that his head was level with my lap.
Then he took a long look at me, from my face to my knees, with one hand on the rail.
"Open your legs."
I opened them.
"Unbutton your jeans."
I did, and my fingers fumbled, and he waited.
"Lift."
I lifted, and he drew the jeans and my underwear down over my boots and dropped them on the stair below.
