Chapter 14: Her Door
Boone stood in the hall in his undershirt and jeans, barefoot, with his hands hanging at his sides.
The hall light was off behind him.
He looked at the open door, and then at me, and he didn't move.
"I told you to lock it," he said.
"I heard you."
"Lainey."
"You knocked, Boone," I said. "You don't get to knock and then tell me to lock it."
He came in.
He pushed the door shut behind him with one hand, and it swung back open a few inches.
That old door never latched unless you turned the key.
Neither of us looked at it.
He stopped in front of me, close enough that I could smell the bourbon and the barn on him.
He didn't grab me.
He bent his head and put his forehead against mine, and he shut his eyes.
He stayed like that, breathing, with his hands still at his sides.
I could feel him shaking.
It was the gentlest thing he'd ever done to me, and he did it before he'd even kissed me.
"This is your room," he said.
"I know whose room it is."
"I used to walk past this door," he said. "Every night you were home. I'd walk past it and keep walking."
"Stop walking," I said.
He kissed me.
It wasn't like the cot.
It was worse, slower.
His hands came up and took my face, both of them, his thumbs along my jaw the way he'd held me in that barn aisle.
I opened my mouth for him.
He made a low sound in his chest and kissed me deeper.
Then his hands slid down my neck and over my shoulders to the zipper at the back of my green dress.
He tugged it.
It stuck halfway.
He swore against my mouth, and I laughed.
Then he yanked it the rest of the way, and the zipper tore out of the seam.
"That was a good dress," I said.
"I hate that dress," he said. "I hated it at the barrel house."
He pushed it off my shoulders, and it fell around my feet.
I had a strapless bra on under it, and he looked at it like it had personally insulted him.
