Chapter 19: Florida

"Ten fifteen," Boone said behind me. "The flight's at ten fifteen."

He was standing in the mudroom door in his shirtsleeves, beside my mother's saddle on its rack.

I didn't turn around.

I could still feel Hayes between my legs, and the cold of the stone on my back.

"Orlando," I said.

"There's a training center outside Ocala," he said. "They've offered me forty stalls and a house on the property."

"For you."

"For us," he said. "It's a little house. One floor. There's no upstairs and no hallway."

I put the tickets down on the table.

"I'll have fourteen million dollars in the bank by Wednesday," Boone said. "You'd never have to work a day you didn't want to."

"I like my job."

"Then there are more horses in Marion County than anywhere in the country."

He came and stood across the table from me.

He didn't touch me.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me for the room," he said. "I know you won't. I'm asking you to come anyway."

"You're asking me to leave my mother's farm the day I got it back."

"I'm asking you to leave this house," he said. "There's a difference."

"Not to me."

He looked down at the tickets.

"I'm not going to ask you twice," he said.

He walked out the back door toward the barns.

I sat at that table for a long time, with the deed in front of me and the tickets beside it.

At ten that night I went down to the foaling barn.

The office light was on.

He was sitting on the cot with his elbows on his knees, the way I'd left him the night of the colic.

He looked up when I came in, and he didn't say anything.

I shut the door behind me.

Then I turned and looked at the window.
