Chapter 12: Chosen

He did not take me home.

He drove through the dark with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on my knee, and I did not tell him to move it.

Back at the tower, the elevator doors closed, and I turned and put him against the mirrored wall.

"I say when," I said.

"You said."

"I'm saying."

I took his tie in my fist and pulled his mouth down to mine.

It was a different kiss from the car.

It was mine, and I took my time.

In the apartment I walked him backward to the windows, where the harbor lights hung on the dark glass, and I opened his shirt button by button.

I wanted to see him.

I had not, the first night, in the dark.

His chest was broad and scarred in two places, a long pale line under the ribs and a round mark near the shoulder.

I put my mouth on each.

"Sadie," he said, hoarse.

"Not yet."

I unbuckled his belt and opened his trousers and went down on my knees on the bare wood.

His breath stopped.

"Sadie," he said again, rougher.

"I'm doing what I want," I said.

I pulled him free.

He was hard and heavy in my hand, the skin hot and silky, the head already wet.

I licked it.

He swore, low and long, and his hand came down into my hair and did not pull.

I took him into my mouth.

He tasted salt and warm skin, and I did not know what I was doing, so I did everything.

I licked along the underside and sucked the tip.

I took more of him, until he hit the back of my throat, and I gagged and kept going.
