Chapter 16: Form Revised
The boardroom of Maddox Holdings sat on the fortieth floor, and it had a table for twenty.
Eighteen people sat at it.
Ezra took the chair at the far end, and I took the seat behind his shoulder that nobody had offered me.
Gerald was already standing, with Colby beside him and the lawyer at his elbow.
He had a new tie and the face of a man about to be generous.
"Gentlemen," he said. "Ladies. This is painful for me."
Nobody said anything.
"My brother has been away for eleven years. He comes back with a will, and the will is a month old in the courts, and he sits in my father's chair. I love him. But the family deserves the truth."
He nodded at the lawyer.
The lawyer laid one sheet of paper on the table and slid it to the middle.
"A codicil to the will," Gerald said. "Signed by our father three weeks before he died. It names the heir to the chair as my son, Colby, if Ezra has been absent from the city for more than ten years."
A murmur went around the table.
Colby lifted his chin.
He had a plaster over his split lip and a look I recognized, the one he wore when he was sure someone else would clean up after him.
"It was in my safe," Gerald said. "I found it last week. I should have found it sooner, and I am sorry."
"It is dated," said a gray-haired woman at the side of the table, "three weeks before he died."
"Yes."
"And witnessed."
"By a notary. Whose seal you can see."
The sheet went from hand to hand.
When it reached Ezra, he glanced at it, and his face did not move.
He passed it back over his shoulder to me.
I read it.
I read it with a finger under the words, as I had read the contract.
It took less than a minute.
The paper was thin and cream and slightly yellowed.
