Chapter 9: The Paper

"Let him up," Ezra told the doorman through the speaker.

I turned on him.

"Why?"

"Because he will be in the lobby all night otherwise, and I'd rather see his face."

He took off his watch and put it on the table.

It was the only thing he did before the elevator chimed.

Colby came out of it already talking.

"There you are." He pointed with the bottle. "You think you can walk out on me? In front of three hundred people? Get your coat, Sadie. We're going home."

"I am home," I said. "This is Mr. Maddox's home."

"Don't be stupid."

He crossed the room and grabbed my wrist.

Ezra's hand closed on Colby's shirt collar.

He did not seem to hurry, and Colby was off his feet for a second before he understood where he was.

The bottle hit the floor and rolled.

"Uncle," Colby gasped. "Uncle, I'm just bringing her home. It's my fiancée."

"She's a guest in my house," Ezra said. "You're not."

"She's mine!"

"Sit down."

He set Colby on the sofa with a little shove, and Colby bounced and stayed there, breathing hard.

His eyes went around the bare room, the boxes against the wall, the vials open on the floor and me barefoot beside them.

I had taken off my shoes in the elevator.

I did not remember doing it.

"So that's why." Colby laughed, high and ugly. "Dad said you were hard up, Uncle. I didn't know you were doing charity."

"Colby," Ezra said quietly.

"No, it's funny. Poor Sadie, so plain nobody else will touch her, so she goes whining to the scary uncle."
