Chapter 18: Rehearsal Dinner
Ingrid's POV
The ballroom held a hundred and twenty guests, nine round tables of white roses, a string quartet and one judge.
The judge sat at the head table in a dark robe, which no rehearsal dinner needs.
I walked in on Preston's arm in a pale blue dress and smiled for the photographer.
The photographer was from the Post.
Beside the dais, Marisol stood with the events team, holding a clipboard and not looking at me.
Behind the sound booth, Mateo leaned against the wall in a black suit, with the technician beside him.
He caught my eye and gave me one slow nod.
"You look beautiful," Preston murmured, close to my ear.
"You look rested."
"I'm happy, Ingrid."
"I can tell."
My father rose from his seat at the head table and tapped a spoon against his glass.
He was good at it.
He spoke about my mother, and the Grand, and the family that sat under the same roof for four generations, and the room went soft.
Several women dabbed their eyes.
"And so, before the toasts," he said, "since we are all family tonight, I'd like to ask the judge to say a few words."
The judge stood, and Preston's hand tightened on mine.
"Dad," I said, loudly enough for the first four tables.
"Sweetheart, in a moment."
"No. Now."
I stood up.
The quartet stopped in the middle of a phrase.
"I would like to say something to our guests first," I said, "since they're my family too."
I looked toward the booth and lifted one finger.
The lights over the dais dimmed.
On the great screen behind the head table, where Marisol had planned to show a slide show of our engagement, a grainy black-and-white clip began to play.
