Chapter 16: Sold

Clint called me at nine on Saturday morning, for the first time since the open house.

"The house closed yesterday," he said. "The investor's crew is clearing it out today. There's a basket in the attic. It's got your mom's name on the lid."

I sat up in bed so fast Hugh grunted.

"Her sewing basket."

"I guess. Wicker. Her name's on a piece of tape." He paused. "They're filling a dumpster. They said anything left at noon goes in."

"I'll be there in twenty minutes."

"Edie, my parents are here."

"Then they can hold the ladder."

There was a green dumpster in the driveway of the gray Craftsman when I pulled up.

A crew in orange vests was tossing things into it from the porch.

Clint's old recliner went in, then the hall rug.

The investor's sign was already staked in the wet lawn. COMING SOON, it said. NEWLY RENOVATED.

My kitchen was the newly renovated part.

Clint's parents stood on the porch in matching fleece vests, holding coffee from a drive-through.

His mother saw me get out of my car and set her coffee down on the railing.

She was small and neat, with a frosted bob and Clint's exact chin.

She came down the steps to meet me before I reached them.

"You have some nerve," she said.

"Good morning, Mrs. Trask."

"Don't you good morning me." Her voice carried. The crew stopped working. "You broke his window. You got him fired. You stood in this kitchen six weeks ago and ran off his buyers, and now he's taken sixty thousand dollars under asking from a man who flips houses. Sixty thousand."

"I'm here for my mother's basket."

"You're here to gloat."

"I'm here for a basket."

Clint's father put his hand on his wife's arm, and she shook it off.

"Shayla told me all about you," she said. "How you moved in and changed everything. How you couldn't stand that he still cared about her. That poor girl is pregnant, and you ruined her wedding to a good man, too."
