Chapter 20: The Table
Braden held the microphone in both fists, and his voice came out cracked and enormous.
"That's a fake," he said. "That is a doctored picture from a woman who has not been well since her father died."
Nobody laughed, and nobody nodded.
Two hundred people were looking at a screen with Lenora's handwriting on it.
"Braden," said the senior partner from his chair. "Is that Ms. Fitch's handwriting?"
"It's not mine to say. Anyone could have traced it."
Lenora stood.
She had her napkin in one hand and nothing in her face at all.
"Braden, put it down," she said.
"I am handling this!"
"You are making it worse."
"It's not what it looks like," he told the room. "It's a lease, everyone. It's what anyone would have done. Do you know what I've done for this firm?"
"You asked me to marry you for a lease," I said.
I didn't have the microphone, but my voice carried to the back of the ballroom anyway.
"You said you loved me. You knelt down in front of sixty people."
"Tilda, please, not here."
"You picked here."
Alexander came up the middle aisle between the tables.
He didn't hurry.
He walked onto the platform and stopped beside me, a little behind my shoulder, and he didn't touch me.
I felt him there anyway.
"Give her the microphone, Braden," he said.
"Go to hell, Alexander."
"Son."
It was Braden's father.
He had risen from his table with both hands on the walking stick, and his face had gone gray.
