Chapter 21: Rent
The firm's library was on the hotel's mezzanine, a paneled room with a long table and a fireplace nobody lit.
The partners sat down one by one, still in their evening clothes.
I stood at the door until the senior partner pointed to the chair at the head of the table.
"It's yours," he said. "It's your building."
I looked at the chair.
Then I walked the length of the table and sat.
It was the first time in my life I had sat at the head of anything.
Braden and Lenora sat at the far end, side by side and a long way apart.
Lenora's hands were folded in her lap, and her eyes were swollen.
Braden had loosened his tie and was staring at the wood.
"Motion before the partnership," the tax partner said. "That Braden Lund and Lenora Fitch be removed from consideration for partner, effective now, for using firm records to deceive a managing partner and this firm."
"Second," said a man near the fireplace.
"This is a coup," Braden said, to nobody.
"Discussion?" asked the senior partner.
Nobody spoke.
"Mr. Lund. Ms. Fitch. Do you wish to say anything?"
Lenora lifted her head.
For a moment I thought she would look at me.
"I wrote it down," she said hoarsely. "That was the stupid thing. I put the whole plan on a sticky note, because I was proud of it."
"Nora," Braden said.
"Shut up, Braden."
She looked at the senior partner.
"I did it. All of it. I'd like it minuted that Tilda never did anything to us."
