Chapter 27: Turned Back
Saverio didn't move.
He looked at the phone in my hand.
"Papa," he said. "She's not well. You know what she..."
"I heard the ambulance before her neighbors did."
The old Don said it flatly, in his son's own words.
"I heard all of it. Forty-four minutes. Untie your brother."
"Papa..."
"My men are at your gate. They've been there since you told her about Via Roma. Your boy let them in."
Saverio looked at the door.
Downstairs, a car door shut, and then another.
Then he went to Gaetano's chair.
He felt in his pockets.
He looked round the room, at the dresser, at the bedside table.
"There's no knife," I said. "You took them all out of this house yourself."
He stood very still.
Then he knelt and picked at the tape on Gaetano's wrist with his fingernails.
It took a long time.
Gaetano watched him do it with his one good eye and didn't say a word.
Feet came up the curving staircase.
Four of the old Don's men, in plain dark suits.
The oldest went straight to Saverio and waited.
