Chapter 26: Shower
"Bring his face," Jared said again, to the woman in the bathrobe this time.
Then a car I didn't know pulled up to the curb, and he got in the back, and it took him away.
Somebody had called it for him.
Sam sat down on the top step.
I sat down next to him, slowly, one hand on the rail.
His cheek had already started to swell, purple under the eye.
"You should have let me hit him," I said.
"You'd have broken your hand."
"Worth it."
He laughed, and then he winced, and then he laughed again.
The officer with the gray mustache came at one in the morning.
He'd heard the address on the radio and asked for it.
He looked at Sam's eye and the cracked paint on the porch post.
He watched the doorbell video twice on Sam's phone.
"Assault," he said. "Fourth degree. I'll add it to the file I've already got on this guy."
The woman in the bathrobe crossed the street and sent him her video before he asked.
A week later the women threw me a baby shower.
They did it at Sam's office because the bride said nobody would think to look for us above a bakery.
