Ray was already on his phone.
"Harborview," he said into it. "The Alder Grand. She's thirty-six weeks and her water just broke on the dance floor."
Sam got one arm behind my back and one under my elbow.
The tables parted for us.
Somebody held the front doors for us.
The ambulance came in six minutes.
She came at 3:52 in the morning on Sunday, January twenty-fourth.
Sam and Ray waited in the hall, because I'd asked them to.
The doctor was the tired woman with her hair in a knot, the one who'd cleaned my nails in October.
She remembered me.
"The tree lady," she said. "Push."
I pushed.
My daughter came out angry and loud, five pounds eleven ounces, slippery and purple and perfect.
They put her on my chest still wet.
She stopped crying and opened her eyes.
They were dark slate.
"They'll change," the nurse said. "Give it a few months."
I didn't care what color they turned out.
I touched each tiny finger.
At six the nurse let the men in.
Ray stood at the foot of the bed in his tight funeral suit with his tie in his pocket.
