Chapter 6: Sponsor Night

I put my duffels down and held out my hand.

"Give me the phone, Colt."

"No way."

"Then keep filming."

I stepped into his shot and looked straight at the lens.

"Hi," I said. "Conor just told me we need to talk like adults. So let's talk."

Conor tried to take the phone, and Colt twisted away, laughing.

"Gold, man," Colt breathed. "Do not stop."

"Conor," I said, "tell them where the twenty thousand went."

"Darcy."

"Tell them. They've been watching you all night."

He looked at the camera.

I picked up my duffels.

"I'll see you at the bank on Monday, Conor."

"Darcy, wait."

I walked out past both of them.

Colt called after me, standing in the doorway.

"You should come tonight! Ironline's launching at my gym. They're signing me for a full year. See how real content is made!"

"I'll think about it," I said.

I meant it.

That evening I went.

The gym was called Colt Strong, and it sat between a pharmacy and a vape shop on Fenner Street.

At seven that evening it was full.

There were banners in red and black.

There were two hundred people in the front room with their phones up, and a stage at the far end with a screen as tall as the wall.
