Chapter 8: Applicant Only
Tobin Seymour didn't look at Brendan.
He looked at me.
"Ms. Keogh, good morning," he said. "Are you here to withdraw?"
"No."
"Then there's no withdrawal."
"I'm her fiancé," Brendan said.
"I understand that, sir." Tobin turned back to his screen. "I can only take a withdrawal from the applicant, and the applicant is standing there. She says no."
"She's under a lot of strain."
"That's often true of people who are applying to universities."
A father in the line gave a short laugh and turned it into a cough.
Brendan's hand stayed flat on the counter.
"Perhaps you don't know who my family is. The Sutcliffe Trust supports a reading room in the library across this quad."
"I know the room," Tobin said. "It has very comfortable chairs."
"I could make a call."
"You could call the dean, and she would tell you what I just did."
His voice was pleasant.
It was the pleasantest I had ever heard a man be while closing a door.
Brendan straightened.
He looked around and found that the whole lobby was looking at him, thirty faces turned his way.
He took his hand off the counter and wiped his palm slowly with a handkerchief.
"We'll continue this at home, Ciara," he said.
"No, we won't."
I unzipped my backpack.
I took out the original letter with the cut seal and laid it on the counter.
I laid down my photo ID, which I had taken out of my shoe at the bus station, and my mother's flour tin.
