Henry was awake before I'd sat up.

"Don't listen to it alone," he said.

I put it on speaker and held the phone between us on the quilt.

There was noise first.

A television somewhere, and ice in a glass, and Bryce breathing.

"Hey," he said. "Hey, it's me."

His words ran into each other.

"You're asleep. Course you're asleep. You're in your big stone house with your big stone husband."

He laughed, and something knocked over on his end.

"You know what's funny? You think you won. You and your grandpa and your little Tuesday office. You think I'm stupid."

A long pause.

"I'm not stupid, Amanda. I'm the only one who ever planned anything."

Henry's hand closed over my wrist.

"They'll come for the money," Bryce said. "I know they'll come. I've known since October. So I did the smart thing."

"Ninety. Ninety thousand of it. I moved it into an account in her name. Kylie's name. She signed everything I put in front of her. She doesn't read."

He laughed again, softer.

"So when they come, it lands on her. Not me. Her. The assistant who stole the client list. Who's going to believe her about anything?"
