Chapter 21: Red Carpet
"They asked me in December," Henry said. "Ashcroft has sponsored the category for six years. I signed off on it without reading the finalists."
"Did you know it was Dorrance?"
"I found out on Monday. I can withdraw. They'd find someone else by tonight."
I looked at the gold letters again.
I thought about the gray line on the title slide, the one I had built at my kitchen table at one in the morning.
"Don't withdraw," I said.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Exactly what you did in the boardroom."
He took off his glasses and folded them.
"Ashcroft gets two tables," he said. "Sponsors always do. Who do you want at them?"
I already knew.
The Rocky Mountain Travel Awards were on Friday, March 27, in the ballroom of the Brown Palace.
The old hotel's lobby rose eight floors to a stained glass ceiling, with iron balconies all the way up.
Somebody had laid a red carpet from the Tremont Place doors to the ballroom, with a white backdrop covered in sponsor logos.
Ashcroft Resorts was the biggest one.
I wore dark green, long, with Henry's grandmother's ring and nothing else on my hands.
