Chapter 16: What Hugh Knew

"Walking," I said. "I told you on the phone that night."

"You told me you were pickling peppers."

"I was walking and then I was pickling peppers. Hugh, I couldn't sleep. You'd just moved my wedding."

He lifted his mouth from my hair.

I turned around and smiled up at him, and he looked at my face for a long time.

"Of course," he said, and kissed my forehead. "Forgive me. I'm a nervous groom."

Then someone called his name from the door, and he was gone into the crowd with his hand already out.

I stood very still for a while, with the gold lock cold on my wrist.

I left at eleven, with my mother's arm through mine and Nina behind us carrying a box of leftover tiramisu.

At the bakery door my mother kissed me and said, "Sleep."

I climbed the back stairs alone.

My apartment door was unlocked and the lamp was on.

Hugh sat in my armchair by the window, with one ankle on his knee, and a glass of my father's grappa in his hand.
